Wake Up to a Granite Giant
From the comfort of August Jack Motor Inn, guests are greeted each morning with the breathtaking view of Stawamus Chief, towering 702 metres above Squamish. Locally known as “The Chief,” this massive granite monolith is one of North America’s largest and offers some of the most iconic hiking experiences in the Sea to Sky Corridor.
Winter Hiking: A Challenging Adventure

For passionate hikers, the Stawamus Chief Trail is a must on the bucket list. Hiking Peak One and Peak Two together provides the most substantial views in the shortest distance. While the trail isn’t extremely long, it is demanding, featuring steep stairways, chains, and ladders as you ascend. The route from the first to the second peak is technically a climbing section, recommended only for hikers with climbing experience. Be cautious in winter, as snow and rain can make the trails slippery.
Seasonal Safety and Park Notices
BC Parks occasionally issues closures for safety reasons. Recently, temporary closures of the North Wall and Grand Wall climbing areas were enacted due to the presence of a food-conditioned bear. Visitors are required to store all food and scented items securely to prevent wildlife encounters. For up-to-date information, check BC Parks Stawamus Chief Park.
Access and Parking Information
The park gate is open year-round, and the Chief Apron parking lot gate operates seasonally:
- March 15 – May 7: 7 am – 9 pm
- May 8 – September 15: 7 am – 11 pm
- September 16 – October 15: 7 am – 9 pm
