Steeped in British history, the origins of afternoon tea hark back to the mid 18th century, where it was the preserve of the rich. The practice is believed to have been started by by the Duchess of Bedford. With the introduction of kerosene lamps in wealthier homes, it became common to eat a late dinner, around 8 or 9 pm. With only breakfast, and a very late dinner, the story is that the Duchess often felt out of sorts by mid afternoon, so she began inviting friends over for tea and assorted snacks. There might be finger sandwiches, scones, cakes, strawberries and cream. It would seem other women had been feeling a bit peckish in the afternoons, and the practice spread rapidly.
Visitors drop by Heritage Park throughout the day, so tea sittings are held at 11:30 am, 12:00 noon, 1:15 pm, 1:45 pm, 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm.
